Hebridean Oatcakes

Oatcakes have stood the test of time claiming a history on the Isle of Lewis stretching back over centuries. First produced in crofters homes using island grown oats, stoneground in the ancient water powered mills. The oatcakes were then baked over peat fires on cast iron griddles. Sadly the open peat fires have slowly disappeared and the fields of Lewis yield oats no more, but here at Stag Bakeries we have kept the best of the past and married that to modern baking methods. The result is an oatcake that is steeped in tradition and rich in flavour, from a recipe that has been refined and balanced over the years and free from artificial colours and flavours.

Our oatcakes have won awards in the Great Taste Award Competitions run by the Guild of Fine Food Retailers, (Bronze in 2001, Bronze in 2003 and Gold in 2005) An achievement we are very proud of, as the competition attracts thousands of entries each year.

Oatcakes are delicious eaten plain or as an accompaniment to such savouries as cheese, pate, prawns etc.
